How to Migrate Bookmarks Between Chrome, Firefox, and/or Edge

settings-browsers

Browser bookmarks are so simple, but an incredibly important part of making a browser your own. Without them, it’s much slower to navigate to your favorite sites.

Whether you want to back up a copy of your bookmarks in case of emergency or want to transfer them to a new browser, here’s how to migrate them easily.

Built-In Bookmark Migration Tools

Each major browser has a built-in tool for bringing your bookmarks in from another browser. Before doing so, it’s a good idea to organize them and remove the clutter.

Chrome

Chrome-Import-Bookmarks

Click the three-dot Menu button and choose Bookmarks > Import bookmarks and settings. On the resulting page, select a browser to import from using the dropdown menu and check the boxes for the data you want to import.

Firefox

Firefox-Import-Bookmarks

Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + B to open the Library window. Select Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser. Choose the browser to import from and the data you’d like to migrate.

Microsoft Edge

Edge-Import-Bookmarks

Select the three-dot Menu, then Settings. Click Import from another browser under Import favorites and other info. Choose the browser you’d like to import from, and click Import.

Export and Import Bookmarks via HTML

If you have an issue with the built-in bookmarks tools or a copy of your bookmarks for backup purposes, you can export them to an HTML file.

Chrome

Chrome-Export-HTML-Bookmarks

Enter chrome://bookmarks in your address bar to open the Bookmarks Manager. Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right and choose Export bookmarks to save them, or Import bookmarks to add them.

Firefox

Follow the same steps for Firefox as above, but select Export Bookmarks to HTML instead. You can also choose Backup to save a copy as a JSON file and Restore it through this menu later, though that won’t be compatible with other browsers like HTML is.

Edge

Navigate to the same page in Edge described earlier, but choose Export to file to save your bookmarks in HTML.

If you use both Firefox and Chrome, check out the best ways to keep your browsers in sync.
