How to Legally Stream MLB Without Cable

One of the main reasons people hang onto cable TV subscriptions, despite the rise of services like Netflix, is to watch live sports. But the landscape of sports TV is slowly changing.

For example, companies like Amazon and Facebook have openly discussed the possibility of bidding for English Premier League broadcast rights. Univision shows Mexican soccer matches in English for free on Facebook, and Disney recently launched the cord-cutting-friendly app, ESPN+.

But even in American sports, which are traditionally much more inward-looking than popular global games, the situation is changing. For instance, if you want to legally catch the latest action in Major League Baseball, you have a few options.

How to Legally Stream MLB Without Cable

Let’s take a look at the different ways to watch MLB without a cable subscription.

MLB.TV

MLB.TV is the league’s official app. It costs $25 per month, so it’s not cheap. However, you’ll have access to every out-of-market game live.

If you just want to watch your local side, you can pay $90 per year. Blackouts apply, but you’ll be able to watch a replay of every match 90 minutes after it ends.

Sling TV, DirecTV, and PlayStation Vue

Sling TV, DirecTV, and PlayStation Vue are the closest thing to a la carte TV subscriptions that you’ll find. If you’re curious about the differences between the three services, check out our guide.

All three broadcast channels that show MLB. Sling offers ESPN, TBS, FOX, and FOX Sports, while DirecTV carries the same channels as Sling but adds the MLB Network. PlayStation Vue provides the same line-up as Sling.

You’ll need to investigate the various packages and prices to see which is the best solution for your needs.

FuboTV

FuboTV is the best option if you’re a general sports fan rather than a baseball-only fanatic.

It only offers FOX Sports, so you won’t be able to watch every MLB match, but it also provides copious amounts of soccer, NFL, NBA, hockey, and more.

And remember, you can even use Kodi to stream live TV legally; just make sure you’ve bought a Kodi box that’s not electrically unsafe.
