Sony Announces the Xperia 5: Your New Camera Overlord

Sony Xperia 5 launch event

Sony’s Xperia 5 is the latest phone in their Xperia range. Boasting triple cameras, a 6.1 inch 21×9 OLED display, and built-in support for the DualShock 4 controller. We managed to use the phone for a brief period during Sony’s launch event at IFA 2019.

The Xperia 5 looks set to become a solid addition to Sony’s flagship lineup. The triple lenses let you capture any memories you like, and with dedicated 16mm, 26mm, and 52mm lenses, you can be sure you always have the right lens for the right job, each working at 12MP. The front-facing camera operates at 8MP, and eye detection auto focus helps to give you sharp photos every time.

The 6.1 inch display is a 21:9 CinemaWide HDR OLED, so it can handle all your media needs. It remasters SDR content to HDR to ensure you have the best possible viewing experience. It runs at a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels.

The specs are:

  • 3140mAh battery
  • 6GB RAM
  • Android 9
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Measures 6.22 x 2.67 x 0.32In (158 x 68 x 8.2mm)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor
  • Weighs 0.362 lbs (164g)
  • USB Type-C, version 3.1

The Xperia 5 features a fingerprint sensor on the right edge of the phone, and supports USB Power Delivery (PD) for fast charging. It’s water resistant to IP65/68, and the screen uses Corning Gorilla Glass 6, so it should handle a tough life in your pocket.

Sony Xperia 1 and Sony Xperia 5 camera comparison

With three lenses to work with, Sony has teamed up with CineAlta to produce a new cinematic camera app called Cinema Pro. This offers you complete control over the look and settings of your video, and supports 4K recording in the full 21:9 aspect ratio. You can shoot with a flat or plain picture profile for editing later on, or with several different looks, depending on the style you’re after.

We only had limited time with the Xperia 5, but it looks set to be a wonderful phone, and capable of producing some extraordinary video quality. It’s set to be available in Europe from October, and available to pre-order as of mid-September. There’s no word on the price, but we’d speculate it’s in the $600 price range to match the rest of the Xperia flagship models.
