If you’ve never heard of Vudu, it’s an on-demand media streaming service owned by Walmart. It usually offers new movies earlier than Netflix, but the full selection of older movies and TV shows still lags far behind.
However, what many people don’t realize is that Vudu also has a growing Movies On Us section that lets you watch full movies for free, so long as you’re willing to endure the occasional ad.
The following is a list of the best free movies you can watch on Vudu right now. You can stream any of these via digital streaming boxes that support Vudu, cast them to Chromecast, or watch them using the Vudu mobile apps.
1. The Matrix
This cult science fiction classic (check out these gifts for science fiction fans) features Keanu Reeves as Thomas Anderson, a computer hacker who goes by the name Neo. Once Neo is contacted by a famous hacker named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), a wanted government terrorist, his entire world turns upside down.
Morpheus brings Neo into the “real world”, a place where humans have been turned into nothing more than a source of energy for intelligent machines. This movie is the first part of a trilogy that chronicles a human rebellion against the machines.
2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
This remake of the terrifying 1984 original film by the same name is perfect for Halloween. Jackie Earle Haley stars in the film as Freddy Krueger, a grossly disfigured demon who terrorizes the dreams of teenagers Kris Fowles (Katie Cassidy) and Dean Russell (Kellan Lutz).
The remake transformed the already horrifying character of Krueger into a true monster, using CGI effects to make his face appear even more gruesome than in the original film. Once Krueger is finished with his rampage of revenge against these teens, you’re probably going to have a hard time sleeping.
3. The Mothman Prophecies
In his supernatural thriller, investigative reporter John Klein (Richard Gere) and his wife Mary Klein (Debra Messing) get into a car accident when swerving to avoid what appears to be a winged human in the road. After his wife dies in the hospital, John discovers his wife’s sketches of the Mothman.
The movie chronicles John’s investigation into other sightings of the Mothman after he finds himself in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, without any recollection of how he got there. The closer John gets the solving the mystery of the Mothman, the more he realizes that his own life may be in danger.
4. City Slickers
This much-loved classic from 1991 features Billy Crystal as Mitch Robbins, Daniel Stern as philandering Phil Berquist, and Bruno Kirby as womanizing Ed Furillo. As Mitch find himself struggling to accept the fact that he’s turning 39, his friends Phil and Ed convince him to go on a two-week holiday together to drive cattle from New Mexico to Colorado.
All three men leave their troubles behind and head west on what should have been a vacation of a lifetime. But their holiday turns into a series of unfortunate events that brings the three friends even closer, and gives them new perspective on their lives back home.
5. City Slickers 2
Part II of the City Slickers series starts one year after the first. On his 40th birthday, Mitch Robbins discovers an old treasure map of Curly’s. With the help of his friend Phil and his brother Glen (Jon Lovitz), they head back to the desert of Arizona to see if they can locate Curly’s lost gold.
Their adventures during this adventure are just as unlucky as the first trip. On their path to find the gold, they meet up with Curly’s brother Duke Washburn (Jack Palance). Duke agrees to split the treasure when they find it. Unfortunately, a group of bandits are hot on the trail of gold as well.
6. Panic Room
Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) is recently divorced and with her daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart), is moving into a newly purchased home in New York.
The house has a panic room made so secure that it’s impossible for anyone to get in. Meg believes they’ll never need the room, but when three burglars break in, she realizes that the room may be the only thing that keeps them alive.
7. When Harry Met Sally
This classic romantic comedy from 1989 starts out with two college graduates Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) sharing a ride home from school to New York. During the 18 hour ride, they argue whether or not a man and a woman can ever be friends without sex getting in the way.
Years later, they meet again and attempt to become friends, putting their debate from years earlier to the ultimate test.
8. Last Man Standing
Last Man Standing takes place during the Prohibition era. John Smith (Bruce Willis) is a drifting mobster who arrives in the town of Jericho, Texas. He soon discovers that the town’s been taken over by two rival gangs.
He uses the opportunity for financial benefit by offering his services as an assassin. His plans work out well until all hell breaks loose, with him standing square in the middle of it.
9. You’re Next
This slasher film from 2011 starts out well enough, as the wealthy Davison family gathers together at their weekend getaway. Just as we get a glimpse of a few family quarrels, things turn disastrous when a gang of crossbow- and ax-wielding murderers descend upon the family.
One by one, each family member is massacred, with the murderers leaving nothing behind but the message “You’re Next” written at the scene, in blood.

10. Windtalkers
If you are a fan of World War II movies, this 2002 film is a must see. It chronicles a time during WWII when the U.S. developed a new unbreakable code for communicating through the help of the Navajo tribe of Native Americans.
Featuring Nicolas Cage as Sgt. Joe Enders, and Adam Beach as Pvt. Ben Yahzee, the film brings to the forefront the struggle the American soldiers faced in honoring their orders to shoot the Navajo soldier they were assigned to protect, rather than let the Japanese capture and interrogate him.
11. Citizenfour
You’ve seen NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in the news, but never before have you seen him as you will in this documentary directed by Laura Poitras. The film features Poitras narrating as both she and journalist Glenn Greenwald travel to Hong Kong for a series of meetings with Snowden.
These series of never-before-seen interviews not only describe the evidence Edward Snowden released to the media about the NSA’s spying on American citizens, but also describe Snowden himself and his reasons for coming forward as a whistleblower.

12. Hart’s War
During WWII, there were many tales of American soldiers detained inside brutal German POW camps. This story, based on a novel by John Katzenbach, tells the tale of Col. William McNamara (Bruce Willis) and his imprisonment inside just such a camp.
The movie slowly reveals McNamara’s resolve to overcome insurmountable odds, as he plots a risky escape for himself and the other soldiers imprisoned there. Ultimately, McNamara must choose between his own life or the freedom of his men.
13. Gods and Monsters
Gods and Monsters is a film that tells the story of aging director James Whale (Ian McKellen) and his attraction to his new gardener, Clayton (Brendan Fraser). Whale was a successful director of early films throughout the 1930s like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. not to mention The Invisible Man, and The Man in the Iron Mask.
The film takes place in the 1950s, during a time when most homosexual men like Whale were not very public about their orientation. While Clayton isn’t interested in a relationship, the two become friends, and through their friendship we learn more about Clayton’s past and the true nature of his character.
14. Stand and Deliver
Released in 1988, this film features Edward James Olmos in one of his earliest roles as Jamie Escalante. Escalante is a high school math teacher who uses unconventional methods to encourage his students. In a school on the brink of being decertified by the school district for underperformance, this is no small feat.
Escalante drives his students to rise above their circumstances and work to pass the Advanced Placement calculus exam. When the Educational Testing Service accuses the students of cheating, it puts everything Escalante has taught them to the test.
15. Hotel Rwanda
Based on a true story, this feature film tells the tale of Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), a manager of a resort hotel in Rwanda. As the country falls into open civil war, Paul works to negotiate for the safety of his family and to maintain the security of the hotel itself.
With genocide taking place just outside the gates of the hotel, Paul makes a final attempt to evacuate refugees at the hotel. But he’ll face one final challenge when they are ambushed by rebel forces.
